A Parent’s Today

Oh how quiet moments bring regret for lost moments,

When we think about the “I should haves”,

The dances around the living room,

The games on the dinning room table,

The snowman that never was formed.

Tired from labor, tired from worry, tired,

We surrender our dances and snowmen,

We give up our “one-day”, but it will not return,

“Just one more game” is met with a glance at the clock,

“Play with me” fades because of housework that must be done.

And yet…there is today.

A new day to find the moments missed yesterday,

Another opportunity to block out the world,

Renewed hope,

Another chance to focus inside these four walls,

Yesterday is gone, but today has not yet passed.

And when today becomes yesterday,

And when the dancers are in asleep,

The games are put away,

The snowmen are smiling while wearing you best scarf,

Regret and lost moments belong only to the-day-before-yesterday.

And then…there is tomorrow.
